| The Environment Business Contributions to the UK Emissions Trading Scheme |
| Before the start of the UK Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), The Environment Business was highly
involved in the design of the scheme and in advising corporates as to whether or not they should sign up. |
| Bridget Rosewell has been on the Executive committee of the UK Emissions Trading Group (ETG) since its inception.
Laurence Smith also sat on many of the working groups of the ETG providing valuable contributions. |
| The initial piece of work was "Taxes and Trading",
written by Bridget Rosewell in 1999 and funded by BP. This document looked at options for how the
UK could meet its Kyoto Protocol commitments. |
| The members of The Environment Business (then part of Volterra Consulting Ltd)
built an emissions trading model to determine the conditions under which
a trading scheme would be successful. This work was written up in a report:
Emissions Trading: The Evolution of a Market for Pollution Permits funded by Blue Circle Ltd. |
| As part of its work on the ETG, The Environment Business developed another model to determine the
incentives necessary for companies to be willing to sign up to a voluntary emissions trading scheme.
The Department of the Environment (now DEFRA) commissioned The Environment Business to determine the form that
an incentive should take and how much money would be necessary. See the Incentives
page for further details. |
| The Environment Business used its expertise and models to help a number of large corporates to
decide whether they should sign up to the UK ETS. |
